That Internet cafe could cost you way more than a cup of coffee

Some thoughts from ComputerWorld on the hazards of computing from hot spots.  The companion to this problem the WiFI networks showing up as Free Internet Access or Free WiFi (these are usually ad Hoc/peer to peer networks running on compromised computers).

I know, its very hard to remember to backup your computer.  And even harder to get the backup off-site so it can be recovered when a big disaster strikes.

Many online backup solutions are slow and costly.  Now there is one that is fast, smart and inexpensive.  It can also store multiple versions of the files in case something is corrupt.

iDrive Basic is 2 GB for free!

Idrive Pro Personal is $4.95/month for 150 GB (or $49.50/year)

$25 million of losses hit customers

This hit as close as Crystal Lake School District 47, where there was $425,000 taken from their accounts in summer 2009.  $125,000 was recovered and the balance covered by insurance.  They have taken steps to close the doors now.  Your company may not be so lucky.   Banks are coming back and pinning the losses on customers, saying they should have protected their computers from infection.

Consider doing on-line banking from a dedicated computer that is disconnected from the internet except for banking.  Netbook computers would do the job quite nicely for around $300.  Its just too easy to get infected these days to rely on good browsing habits and your anti-virus software.

Mobile Phone Radiation Print

Normally I am not much of an alarmist on these topics, but a little knowledge and caution can be smart.  Two ways to reduce your exposure to radiation:

Buy a low radiation phone from the list

Change how you use the phone

Further complicating the issue is there are two divisions of radiation  non-ionizing and ionizing radiation.   Ionizing radiation has ability to remove electrons from their orbit, so are less destructive. Mobile phones emit the non-ionizing radiation.  More from the EPA   Apparently cell phones, radios, TV's are the non-ionizing.

So, like usual, do some reading and form your own conclusions.
